Star of David

I've been interested in the power of symbols. In one small design element, they seem to have meaning far beyond words or other forms of communication. The American flag, for instance, means many things to a veteran-it can symbolize duty, sacrifice or freedom. It can also represent human rights, opportunity, wealth and power. (I discuss this further with my piece "New Glory".)

I was at an art festival one day and saw a fellow artist with a Star of David tattoo on his leg. It was a modern, abstract version and I asked him about it. He was quite passionate while talking and I was impressed by the significance of the symbol for him and so many others. I wondered if I could create a piece of artwork with the Star of David that would be respectful, powerful, meaningful and perhaps capture an element of that passion.

Although I'm not Jewish, I thought about the Star of David and what it could represent from my own observations. I concluded that this symbol, like the American flag, represents loss, sacrifice and a strong will to overcome suppression. It represents a decision and commitment for projected survival into the future.

In this artwork, I show the Star of David repeating itself, going off into the stars in the night sky. This represents the star continuing into the infinite, meaning infinite survival.
